How are people affected by smell and taste disorders?

Smell and taste are important senses and their contribution to quality of life are often taken for granted. Those born with an impairment, or anyone whose sense of smell or taste becomes lost or distorted, can be affected physically and mentally.

Imagine not being able to smell your Christmas tree or taste mince pies. Our senses of smell and taste play a significant role in our memory, mood, and emotions. They are an integral part of many enjoyable life experiences, forming an important sentimental pathway. Not being able to enjoy these experiences can lead to ill health, depression and isolation.

Christmas can be a really tough time for those affected by smell and taste disorders who may not be able to enjoy celebrating it fully.

Our Christmas 2024 fundraising appeal

The Fifth Sense design is based on Jimi’s ‘Past Certainties’ series which isolates objects, showing a disconnect felt by so many with smell and taste disorders. His work is available as a digital image, hand-printed Christmas cards, an original signed print and coaster sets. Visit Jimi’s online shop here.

Jimi and Fifth Sense

Jimi experienced a lack of support with his smell disorder from the ear, nose and throat clinic, making him determined to raise awareness of smell and taste disorders. Through Fifth Sense, he will soon help to train future GPs at Dundee School of Medicine to understand smell and taste impairment.

About Jimi’s work

Based in Dundee, Scotland, Jimi works as an artist and designer. He, his wife, Kathy, and young daughter, Bethan, sell their work through family-run printmaking and design company, Beebirds.

Jimi’s work has different themes, across many disciplines. His art explores connections with his home and the objects that are important to his sense of family. Cycling is a passion of his and the inspiration behind his popular ‘Cycling Views’ series, which depicts scenes from some of his favourite routes.

All money raised through our Christmas fundraiser will go towards our cause, as we continue to fight for better support, recognition, education and research for everyone affected by smell and taste disorders.

We thank Jimi sincerely for his dedicated support. Please visit his online shop to view his full range of work and follow him on social media – Facebook and Instagram.
