Golden (Magic) Berries
Having only seen them dried and in a packet, I was amazed to find out that they’re actually what I know of as Cape Gooseberries (Latin name Physalis)
I’m pretty sure I’ve written about them at some point but I can only say that in their original (undried) form, they are the sweetest/sourest/juiciest/surprisingest little fruit – beautifully encased in its own protective lantern – that I have ever eaten.
So to discover them dried as a new exciting addition to any granola, cereal or porridge has already made my new year start with a bang! Coz boy, do they pack a punch. I was actually warned before eating them… They contain an enormous amount of flavour which can actually take some getting used to, even for those of us who can generally eat a mouthful of anything without noticing much.
You can read all about them in Cheryl Strachan’s super blog, Sweet Spot Nutrition here from which I’ve also borrowed these images. Apparently, they’re also incredibly good for you (which is useful) what with anti-inflammatory and immunity-boosting properties to name just two. You can read more here. And with a little bit of searching, I found these recipes for zingy granola, spicy salsa, and chicken with herb sauce – and of course, there are plenty more out there.
