Research

Fifth Sense is determined to improve the health, quality of life and wellbeing of people affected by smell and taste disorders through research.

Our aim is to work with others to accelerate clinical, basic scientific and psychosocial research. We know we can achieve far more and get there faster by working with others rather than standing alone.

With research partners in universities, the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors, industry and the NHS we are developing a comprehensive research programme to find answers to smell and taste disorders.

  • We have to improve our understanding of smell loss and recovery and identify potential treatments.
  • Research is needed to identify steps to improve mental wellbeing and good health.
  • We need to improve our understanding of the long term loss of smell and taste as symptoms of Long Covid which affects a growing number of people.
  • We will support steps to grow research capacity in labs and clinics as we know people living with smell and taste disorders have not been seen as a priority.

We are currently working with our beneficiaries, researchers and the James Lind Alliance on the Smell and Taste Priority Setting Partnership to establish a set of research priorities which will be at the heart of our emerging research strategy.

Fifth Sense has established a Patient and Public Involvement Panel (PPI Panel) to enable researchers to call on the expertise and knowledge of people living with smell and taste disorders when designing research trials and studies.

Fifth Sense will continue to encourage members and supporters to take part in research trials that have been approved by our Board. We will continue to initiate research that highlights the challenges that the people we represent face, such as the Impact of Olfactory Disorders and Barriers to Effective Healthcare for Patients With Smell and Taste Disorders studies we have previously undertaken.

We also have a repository of open access research papers available to download.
